Impact of Covid on Grocery chains and Malls

As more sales shift online, retailers are using their stores as mini-distribution centers. Simon Property Group, the biggest mall owners in the US is in talks with Amazon to convert ailing department stores into open warehouses. If the outcome comes true, Amazon may use these vacant spaces as an opportunity to open more of its grocery stores like Whole Foods Markets.

This could be a positive move as the retail landscape has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. Mall owners such as Simon are struggling to find new uses for retail space when only a few retailers are still growing. For Amazon, filling that mall space is about shortening the distance between where customers live and its warehouses.
