Starbucks Store Distribution: US vs UK vs Canada

Share:

Starbucks has 16,909 stores in the US, 1,407 in Canada and 1,387 in the UK, based on ScrapeHero Datastore data collected in September 2026. The US has about 12 times as many stores as either of the other two countries, but store counts alone don’t explain the Starbucks store footprint. Population and geography shape how stores spread in each market.

About this Report: This report compares Starbucks store distribution across the three countries. It covers store count by state, nation and province, store density per 100,000 people, how concentrated stores are in each country’s largest regions.

Key Findings

  • The US leads in store count and density. It has 50 stores per million people, against 35 in Canada and 20 in the UK. The 12x gap in store count becomes 2.5x against the UK once you adjust for population.
  • Stores concentrate by region, and the pattern differs by country. England holds 84% of UK stores and Ontario holds 42% of Canada’s. California, the largest US state by store count, holds 18%, and it takes eight US states to pass half.
  • Density varies widely within countries. Mississippi has 2 stores per 100,000 people, while Washington and California have 8. In Canada, British Columbia has 5.6 and Quebec has 1.3. In the UK, Scotland has 2.4 and Wales has 1.6.

About This Data

Methodology and scope

  • Source: Starbucks store location data from ScrapeHero Datastore.
  • Collection dates: US data was last updated on September 21, 2026. Canada was updated on September 9, 2026, and the UK on September 2, 2026.
  • What a count means: Each number is the count of store listings in the dataset on those dates. It may differ from totals Starbucks reports, because a location snapshot reflects one point in time.
  • Regions: The US count includes the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The UK count includes 2 stores in the Isle of Man, which is a Crown Dependency and not part of the UK.
  • Population figures: Per-person rates are based on population estimates and are rounded.

How Many Starbucks Stores Are in the US, UK, and Canada?

Starbucks has 16,909 stores in the US, 1,407 in Canada and 1,387 in the UK. Among the three countries, the US has the largest Starbucks store count by a wide margin. It has about 12 times as many stores as Canada or the UK.

Canada and the UK are close. Canada has 20 more stores, a gap of about 1.4%.

Bar chart showing Starbucks stores in the US (16,909), Canada (1,407) and the UK (1,387).

Population changes the comparison. The US has 50 stores per million people, Canada has 35 and the UK has 20. The UK has about the same number of stores as Canada but more people, so its density is lower. After adjusting for population, the US lead over the UK is 2.5x, not 12x.

Country Stores Stores per million people Cities with a store Stores per city
US 16,909 50 4,694 3.6
Canada 1,407 35 331 4.3
UK 1,387 20 555 2.5

Stores per city is calculated from the store count and the number of cities with at least one store.

The last two columns show a different pattern. Canada averages 4.3 stores in each city that has a Starbucks. The US averages 3.6 and the UK 2.5. Canadian stores sit in fewer cities, with more stores in each one.

What you could do with this data

Store counts per person give you a benchmark. For example, a retail analyst could compare a chain’s density in one market with the same chain’s density in another, then check which areas fall well below that level. Location-level data from ScrapeHero Datastore lets you run that comparison for thousands of brands.

Which US States Have the Most Starbucks Stores?

California has the most Starbucks stores with 3,053. Texas follows with 1,491, then Florida (941), New York (721) and Illinois (710). Those five states hold 6,916 stores, or 41% of the US total.

California alone has 18% of all US stores. California and Texas together have 27%. Texas has just under half of California’s count.

The next five states are Washington (647), Arizona (601), Ohio (523), North Carolina (517) and Virginia (507). The top 10 states hold 9,711 stores, about 57% of the total.

Rank State Stores Share of US stores
1 California 3,053 18.1%
2 Texas 1,491 8.8%
3 Florida 941 5.6%
4 New York 721 4.3%
5 Illinois 710 4.2%
6 Washington 647 3.8%
7 Arizona 601 3.6%
8 Ohio 523 3.1%
9 North Carolina 517 3.1%
10 Virginia 507 3.0%

Do All 50 States Have Starbucks?

Yes. Starbucks has stores in all 50 states, plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Counts fall sharply below the top 10. Twenty-five states have between 100 and 499 stores, and 15 states have fewer than 100. Vermont has the fewest with 14. North Dakota (25), Wyoming (28), Maine (34) and Rhode Island (35) are next.

The 15 states with the fewest stores have 747 stores combined. That is 4.4% of the US total, and about half of Texas’s count alone.

Counts show where stores are, but not how well a state is served. Washington has 647 stores and Pennsylvania has 469, yet Pennsylvania has far more people. That comparison needs population data, so it comes in the density section.

For city-level views, including drive-thru stores and top tech cities, see our Starbucks location analysis in the US. It used an earlier dataset, so its counts differ from the ones here.

Which US States Have the Highest Starbucks Store Density?

Store density is the number of stores per 100,000 residents. It lets you compare states of different sizes. The US average is 5 stores per 100,000 people. The highest densities are 8 to 9, in states such as Hawaii, Washington and California.

Store count and density tell different stories. California has 3,053 stores and Washington has 647. California has almost five times as many, but both states sit at about 8 stores per 100,000 people.

The middle of the chart is crowded. Many states sit at 4 or 5, close to the national average. Wyoming (28 stores) and Montana (53) are at 5, which matches the national rate. Florida has the third-highest store count in the US (941) but is at 4, below the average. Pennsylvania has 469 stores and is also at 4. Washington’s density is double Pennsylvania’s.

The lowest densities in the chart are in Mississippi and Maine, at 2 stores per 100,000 people. That is about a quarter of the rate in Washington and California. West Virginia, Oklahoma, New Hampshire and Louisiana are at 3.

What you could do with this data

Density makes states of different sizes comparable. For example, a site-selection team could list states that fall below the national rate, then use city-level store data to find which areas within them have the fewest stores. This is a hypothetical use case.

How are Starbucks Stores Distributed Across the UK?

Starbucks has 1,387 stores in the UK. England has 1,169 of them, 84% of the total. Scotland has 131, Wales has 51, and Northern Ireland has 34. Two more stores are in the Isle of Man.

England has about 9 times as many stores as Scotland. Scotland has about 2.6 times as many as Wales and nearly 4 times as many as Northern Ireland.

Nation Stores Share of UK stores
England 1,169 84.3%
Scotland 131 9.4%
Wales 51 3.7%
Northern Ireland 34 2.5%
Isle of Man* 2 0.1%

*The Isle of Man is a Crown Dependency and not part of the UK. The dataset includes its 2 stores in the UK total.

Which UK Nations Have the Highest Starbucks Store Density?

Scotland has the highest Starbucks store density in the UK, at 2.4 stores per 100,000 people. England has 2.0, Northern Ireland has 1.8 and Wales has 1.6. The UK average is 2.0.

England has the most stores but sits at the UK average. Its share of stores roughly matches its share of the population. Scotland is 20% above the average and Wales is 20% below it. Scotland’s density is about 1.5 times Wales’s. Northern Ireland and Wales are close to each other.

UK densities are low next to the other two countries. Scotland, the densest UK nation, is below Canada’s average of 3.5 stores per 100,000 people and well below the US average of 5. England’s 2.0 is about the same as Mississippi and Maine, which are among the lowest US states in the chart.

Which Province has the Most Starbucks Stores in Canada?

Ontario has the most Starbucks stores in Canada, with 596. British Columbia has 317, Alberta has 229 and Quebec has 117. Canada has 1,407 stores in total, so Ontario holds 42% of them.

Starbucks has stores in 12 of Canada’s 13 provinces and territories. Nunavut has none in the dataset.

Province or territory Stores Share of Canada’s stores
Ontario 596 42.4%
British Columbia 317 22.5%
Alberta 229 16.3%
Quebec 117 8.3%
Saskatchewan 43 3.1%
Manitoba 39 2.8%
Nova Scotia 29 2.1%
New Brunswick 21 1.5%
Newfoundland and Labrador 10 0.7%
Prince Edward Island 4 0.3%
Northwest Territories 1 0.1%
Yukon 1 0.1%

How Concentrated Are Starbucks Stores Across Canadian Provinces

Starbucks stores in Canada are highly concentrated. Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec have 1,259 stores, or 89.5% of the total. The other eight provinces and territories share 148 stores, and none of them has more than 43.

Ontario and British Columbia alone hold about 65% of all stores.

Which Canadian Provinces Have the Most Starbucks Stores Per Person?

British Columbia has the highest density at 5.6 stores per 100,000 people. Alberta is next at 4.5. Canada’s average is 3.5 stores per 100,000 people, so these two provinces have more stores per person than the national average.

Ontario has the most stores but ranks third on density, at 3.7. That is just above the national average. Saskatchewan follows at 3.4.

Quebec has the lowest density of any province or territory, at 1.3. It ranks fourth in store count, but its density is about a quarter of British Columbia’s.

Density figures for Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Prince Edward Island rest on 1 to 4 stores each. One new store would change those rates a lot, so they are better read as a general level than a ranking.

Which Regions Have the Highest Concentration of Starbucks Stores?

Starbucks stores concentrate most in England within the UK, in Ontario within Canada, and in California within the US.

Country Largest region Share of country’s stores Regions that together hold more than half of stores
UK England 84.3% 1 of 5 (England)
Canada Ontario 42.4% 2 of 12 (Ontario and British Columbia)
US California 18.1% 8 of 52 (California, Texas, Florida, New York, Illinois, Washington, Arizona, Ohio)

England holds 84% of UK stores. Ontario and British Columbia hold 65% of Canada’s stores, and four provinces hold 90%. In the US, California holds 18%, and it takes eight states to pass half of all stores (51.4%).

The three countries divide into different numbers of regions (5 in the UK, 12 in Canada, 52 in the US), so the last column is not a like-for-like comparison.

What the Starbucks Store Distribution Data Shows

Starbucks’ footprint is anchored in the US. It has 16,909 stores, or 50 per million people, against 35 in Canada and 20 in the UK.

Inside each country, a few regions hold most stores. England has 84% of UK stores, Ontario has 42% of Canada’s and California has 18% of the US total.

Store count and store density don’t always agree. England and Ontario have the most stores in their countries, but Scotland (2.4 stores per 100,000 people) and British Columbia (5.6) are denser. Washington has 647 stores and Pennsylvania has 469, yet Washington’s density is double Pennsylvania’s.
