Growth Trajectory of Convenience Stores in the US
We analyzed the number of convenience stores in the US over a six-year period, from 2018 to 2024. The number of stores seems to have fluctuated over this period.
The number of US convenience stores decreased between 2018 and 2022. However, the number is picking up; in 2024, the number of stores a re close to how it was in 2020.
Though the actual reason for this fluctuation and subsequent growth is unknown, factors such as shifting consumer habits, the growth of online grocery delivery, etc., could have impacted it.
How are Convenience Stores Distributed State-Wise?
In our analysis of the convenience stores in the US, New York emerged as the state with the most stores, followed by Texas, which has 14,314.
It can be concluded from the graph that the first 10 states in the list of states with the most convenience stores have more than 5,000 stores. The first four states have more than 11,000 stores in total.
Who Owns the Most Convenience Stores in the US?
The American convenience store chain 7-Eleven owns the most stores in the US at 9402. The others that follow are Circle K, with 6,890 stores, and Alimentation Couche Tard, with 6460 stores.
Interestingly, 7-Eleven outnumbers Circle K with 2500+ stores.
The store distribution among the top ten convenience stores is not even. The first on the list has more than 9,000 stores. The next two do not have so many, their numbers are closer to 6,000.
The other convenience store chains have fewer stores than the top 3.
Top Convenience Store Chains Distributed Across States
Next, we attempted to find the distribution of the leading convenience store chains in different states. Here is a pictorial representation of the top three states where each convenience store chain is most distributed.
The most interesting insight was that the top three states where 7-Eleven is located outnumber the other convenience store chains.
Florida is on the list of states with the most number of 7-Eleven, Circle K, and Alimentation Couche Tard stores. However, Florida has more 7-Eleven stores than the other two.
The same is the case with Texas. Texas is also on the list of the top three states with 7-Eleven, Circle K, and Alimentation Couche Tard. The number of 7-Eleven stores in Texas far outnumbers the other two.
How is 7-Eleven Distributed Across the US?
We already know that California has the most 7-Eleven stores. Now, let’s see which cities and counties top the list of most 7-Eleven stores.
Las Vegas topped the list of cities with the highest number of 7-Eleven stores in the US. The city has 164 7-Eleven stores.
Dallas and Los Angeles follow in the second and third positions with 134 and 125 stores, respectively.
Los Angeles County has the highest number of 7-Eleven stores in the US. Orange County comes second on the list with about 300+ fewer stores than Los Angeles.
