Walmart is the second-largest online mass merchandiser behind Amazon, but it’s only a distant second. With $136 billion in total sales last year, Amazon has other assets and services as well, namely a variety of video, entertainment and other services available through its Prime membership.

Walmart is giving shoppers a clear incentive to make in-store pickups, turning their brick-and-mortar locations into a virtue. Walmart’s holiday quarter U.S. online sales surged 29%, but they have been even more aggressive this year. They continue to make online acquisitions, including niche retailers ModCloth, Moosejaw and Shoebuy, for millions of dollars.
