As of 24 September 2026, ScrapeHero tracks 596 Sam's Clubs in the United States, in 44 states. Texas has the most, 82, and Connecticut, Delaware and Idaho have 1 each. Beyond the count, this report measures how far those clubs reach: 31.6% of US households live within a 15-minute drive of one.

The people Sam's Club can reach are somewhat less well off than the country as a whole: they earn $107,020 a year on average against $113,517 nationally. Most households that can reach a Sam's Club cannot reach a second: 21.4% of the households Sam's Club reaches can get to two or more within 15 minutes.
This report asks how far Sam's Club's clubs actually reach: not how far away they are in miles, but how many households can drive to one and how quickly, what those households earn, how many have a second Sam's Club to choose from, and which metropolitan markets the chain trades in and which it has left alone. Every figure is measured along the real road network and apportioned down to census block level, so the reach is what a car can cover rather than a circle drawn on a map. The short answer is 40.8 million households within a 15-minute drive, 31.6% of the country's 129.2 million, earning $4.37tn a year between them.1
2.5% of households are within five minutes of a Sam's Club; 62.6% are within thirty. Almost nobody lives five minutes from a Sam's Club. At this chain's scale a visit is a planned trip, and the thirty-minute figure is the one that describes it. Households within five minutes of a Sam's Club earn 16% less than those within thirty: $96,302 a year on average, against $114,323.
Sam's Club operates 596 clubs in the United States, spread across 44 states and 522 separate cities and towns, and mostly in the towns and cities rather than between them.
The US Census marks every census block urban or rural. By that measure 576 of Sam's Club's 596 stand in an urban area (96.6%) and 16 in a rural one (2.7%)6. Of the people Sam's Club reaches within a 15-minute drive, 97.5% live in an urban area, against 80% of the country as a whole.
Some Sam's Clubs stand in crowded places and some in thinly populated ones, which makes an enormous difference to how many people are nearby. Sorted by the population density of their own trade areas, in people per square kilometre, the thinnest tenth have 35,643 households within a 15-minute drive8. The densest tenth have 174,792, roughly 5 times more. The people near the crowded ones are also better off, by $24,845 a year.
31.6% of US households can reach a Sam's Club inside a 15-minute drive. That is 40.8 million households of 129.2 million, or 105.5 million people. We work it out by taking every home in the country and asking how long it would take to drive to the nearest Sam's Club, at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 minutes. A home near two Sam's Clubs counts once. The shape that comes out is the club's trade area9.
Sam's Club is a membership club, which the reach figure does not know. Household Reach counts the households that could drive to a club, which is what a site or a market is judged on. Walking in with a trolley also needs a paid membership, and this page carries no figures on who holds one.
A drive time here does not know two things. It uses posted speed limits with no congestion model, so every figure on this page is an upper bound: a real drive in a dense market at peak hours is slower, and a minute of delay is a fifth of a five-minute budget against a thirtieth of a thirty-minute one. And it assumes a car, so a household with no vehicle is counted as reached while being unable to make the drive.5
7.2% of the households inside a 15-minute Sam's Club trade area own no vehicle, against 8.3% of households nationally.
Counting only households that own a vehicle moves Sam's Club's reach from 31.6% to 32%.

| Drive time | Households that can reach one | Share of all US households % |
|---|---|---|
| 5 min | 3,189,220 | 2.5 |
| 10 min | 18,924,309 | 14.6 |
| 15 min | 40,843,592 | 31.6 |
| 20 min | 59,022,949 | 45.7 |
| 25 min | 71,646,913 | 55.5 |
| 30 min | 80,922,107 | 62.6 |
Double the time from 15 minutes to 30 and the ground a club covers, its trade-area footprint, grows around 6 times bigger, and it picks up another 31% of US households.

A minority of the households that can reach a Sam's Club have a second one choose from. 21.4% of the households that can reach a Sam's Club in 15 minutes can reach two or more of them. At five minutes 0.3% of the households that can reach a Sam's Club can reach a second one, and at thirty minutes 58.6%.
32.1 million households have exactly one Sam's Club within reach. Another 28,075 have six or more.

| Clubs reachable | Households | Share of reached households % |

| 1 club | 32,097,361 | 78.6 |

Households within a 15-minute drive of a Sam's Club earn $107,020 a year on average. The figure for the country as a whole is $113,517. So the people Sam's Club can reach earn 6% less than the national average. Added together, everyone in that catchment earns $4.37tn a year: the chain's Trade Area Buying Power.
On the Income Capture Ratio, which compares what the households a chain reaches earn against the country as a whole, 1 is exactly average and Sam's Club scores 0.943, somewhat below the middle. Above 1 means it reaches wealthier households than the country's average; below means less wealthy.
Households within five minutes of a Sam's Club earn $96,302; go out to thirty minutes and the figure rises to $114,323, almost exactly the national average. In other words, the households closest to a Sam's Club are less well off than the ones further out, by 16%.
Club by club the numbers differ enormously. The typical Sam's Club, meaning the median club with half above it and half below, has 68,910 households within a 15-minute drive. Ranked by how many households are nearby, the bottom tenth of clubs, the 10th percentile, have 28,405 nearby; the top tenth, the 90th percentile, have 155,314 or more.

| Trade-area size (households) | Clubs | Share of clubs % |
|---|---|---|
| 0–25,000 | 40 | 6.7 |
| 25,000–50,000 | 171 | 28.7 |
| 50,000–75,000 | 114 | 19.1 |
| 75,000–100,000 | 106 | 17.8 |
| 100,000–125,000 | 61 | 10.2 |
| 125,000–150,000 | 37 | 6.2 |
| 150,000 or more | 67 | 11.2 |
Rank all 596 clubs again, this time by the median household income of the people living around them, and the middle club sits at $97,321 a year. The bottom tenth are under $76,851 and the top tenth over $135,211. This page reports aggregates; it does not name individual clubs.
Two ways to read trade-area income. Count every household Sam's Club reaches and the average income is $107,020, 6% below the national figure. Instead look at the typical club and ask what its neighbours earn, and the answer is $97,321, lower by 9%. Both are measured over the same clubs: the first weights every household reached, the second takes the middle club.
Neither, really: local prices where Sam's Club trades are about the US average. On the Bureau of Economic Analysis's Regional Price Parities, which set the United States at 100 and measure every metro and state against it, the places Sam's Club trades in come out at 98.8.4 So the $107,020 its households earn on average is worth $108,280 once you allow for local prices, more than the raw figure suggests by $1,260.
Texas has more Sam's Clubs than any other state, 82. The fewest, among the 44 states that have any, is 1 in Connecticut. Of the 50 states, 6 have no Sam's Club at all.
Household Reach is the share of a state's households living within a 15-minute drive of at least one Sam's Club. Nevada is the highest state at 71.2% and Idaho the lowest at 5.8%, a 12.3× range7. The figure for the country as a whole is 31.6%.
Club count and household reach rank states differently. Of the 9 states with 20 or more locations, these two sit furthest apart on the two measures. California is 3rd by club count (31 locations) and 8th by household reach (29.1%). Michigan is 8th by club count (23 locations) and 2nd by reach (40.5%).

Figures cover the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Alaska and Hawaii are included, on the maps as well as in the tables. Puerto Rico, Guam and the other US territories are not covered.
Household Reach can be thin at 15 minutes and near-complete at thirty in the same state. Maryland gains 50.6 percentage points between the two, which says the clubs there are positioned for a drive rather than for a neighbourhood.
Coverage is uneven enough to sort the states into three groups10: the broad ones, the partial ones and the thin ones. Of the states Sam's Club trades in, 13 are below 25% within 15 minutes.

Grouped into the four Census Bureau regions, Sam's Club reaches most of the South, where 38.3% of households are within a 15-minute drive, and least of the Northeast at 12.3%. The South holds 300 clubs and the Northeast 49.
Most: Sam's Club has a club in 274 of the 387 metropolitan areas in the United States. Below: which cities and metro areas it trades in, and how the network splits between big cities, small ones and the countryside.
A city name here is the postal city on a club's address. City limits are set by annexation, so they vary widely in how much of a market they contain. The table gives the club count for each city name alongside the metropolitan area it belongs to, and the share of that metro's clubs the city holds11.

Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington spreads its Sam's Clubs across 15 separate city names.
San Antonio contains 100% of its metropolitan area's Sam's Clubs. Plano contains 12.5% of its own; the remaining 87.5% of that market carries other city names.
City limits are a poor guide to a market, so the rest of this section uses metro areas instead: a city plus the surrounding counties whose residents commute into it. The formal name is a metropolitan statistical area, or a Core Based Statistical Area, and its boundary is drawn from commuting patterns rather than from city limits.3 And because a metro is a whole number of counties, rolling reach up to metro level is exact arithmetic rather than an approximation. Sam's Clubs sit in 408 US counties.

Denver-Aurora-Centennial is the strongest of the 25 largest metros Sam's Club trades in, at 75.8% of households within 15 minutes, and San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont the weakest at 7.4%.
In San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont even a thirty-minute drive reaches 31.2% of households, the lowest of the metros listed here. Adding clubs would not necessarily change that: the figure is set by how far the road network reaches in half an hour, which is what we measure.
How thinly the clubs are spread varies too. Measured as households per club, Pittsburgh has one Sam's Club for every 37,144 households; San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad has one for every 311,308, an 8.4× difference between two large American metros that no national figure can show.
113 metropolitan areas have no Sam's Club at all. The largest is Boston-Cambridge-Newton, 1,940,688 households.
Not everywhere is a city. Every county in the United States is one of three kinds: built around a city, built around a town, or neither. The official terms are metropolitan, for an urban core of 50,000 people or more, micropolitan, for 10,000 to 50,000, and outside any metro area for the rest. Where a chain's stores fall across the three says something a club count cannot.
| Settlement class | Clubs | Share of clubs % |
|---|---|---|
| Metropolitan | 578 | 97.0 |
| Micropolitan | 18 | 3.0 |
| Outside any metro or micro area | 0 | 0.0 |
18 of Sam's Club's 596 locations (3%) sit outside any metropolitan area, all of them in counties built around a town rather than around neither, against 97% in a metropolitan county.
| Settlement class | US households | Reached within 15 minutes % |
|---|---|---|
| Metropolitan | 110,886,900 | 36.5 |
| Micropolitan | 11,131,909 | 3.1 |
| Outside any metro or micro area | 7,190,527 | 0.1 |
Measured separately inside each class, Sam's Club reaches 36.5% of the households in metropolitan counties and 0.1% of those outside any metro or micro area.
Each figure is a population-weighted apportionment of American Community Survey block-group estimates onto inbound drive-time catchments, computed per club on a routable OpenStreetMap network graph and deduplicated at census-block level across the chain.1
Three dates govern any drive time. The road network was built 21 August 2026, the store list was refreshed 24 September 2026, and the demographics are the ACS 2024 5-year release covering 2020–2024, with every money figure in 2024 dollars.2 Roads opened since the network was built do not appear, which understates reach slightly in fast-growing areas.
Limitations. Drive times use posted speed limits with no congestion model, so reach is optimistic in dense markets at peak hours. The store list is an independent scrape, deduplicated to one record per coordinate, so two genuinely distinct clubs at one coordinate collapse into one and the count is a lower bound. US territories are outside the coverage used here: Sam's Club's 7 clubs in Puerto Rico are not included, so a company count that includes them will be higher. ACS estimates describe a five-year window centred before the club snapshot, so fast-growing markets are slightly understated. And these figures describe access, not patronage: nothing here measures who actually shops where.
This page states what is measured and where it falls short. The detailed statistical treatment is documented: apportionment validation, the sensitivity tests behind each parameter, the routing-engine comparisons, and the error bounds on every band. US cities ranked by how many Sam's Clubs they hold, most first. Each row carries the city's own club count, the metropolitan area it belongs to, how many Sam's Clubs that whole metro holds, how many separate city names the metro spans, and the share of the metro's clubs this one city accounts for. A city here is the postal city on a club's address, not a municipal boundary.

US metropolitan areas ranked by how many households they contain, biggest first. Each row carries the number of Sam's Clubs in that metro and the share of the metro's households within 5, 15 and 30 minutes' drive of one, plus the households reached per club. A metropolitan area, formally a Core Based Statistical Area, is a city plus the surrounding counties that commute into it.
