The big news of the day – “Amazon launched Amazon Prime in India“. How exciting !
We decided to go beyond the PR and hype machine and look at the hard cold facts and data on what it means to the India eCommerce scene.
Last month we had written a blog comparing the major e-commerce websites in India and now we look at the impact of Amazon Prime which has had great success with “tens of millions of subscribers”
Amazon took what it has learned from the 10 plus years of Amazon prime elsewhere and definitely didn’t come unprepared.
Amazon India has close to 9,55,807 products listed as Prime eligible which clearly shows that this has been in the works for a pretty long time.
It would be an understatement to say that Amazon brought a gun to a fist fight
While Flipkart has already started their own version of Prime with “Flipkart First”, it never really became a hit and it would be an understatement to say that Amazon brought a gun to a fist fight by launching Prime at a lower annual fee (₹499) than a Flipkart First subscription (₹500) in addition to 2 months of free Prime services.
We collected some data on the number of products that are Prime eligible under some of the major categories and here are our findings.
Having nearly a million products on launch is a pretty big deal and it can only get better from here with Amazon promising to roll out its Amazon Prime Video services in India soon.
Flipkart will really need to come up with new strategies as they have already lost the battle in app downloads. It would be great to see how Flipkart would react to this and how this would shape the Indian e-commerce industry.
